Why dried Barf?
Dried BARF primarily emerged as a higher quality and nutritionally richer alternative to kibble, and a more practical alternative to the classic BARF diet for dogs, which is based on raw meat, bones, and supplements.
Why does dried BARF even exist?
The main reasons are quite practical:
1. Storage and Convenience
Dried BARF:
- lasts 12 months at room temperature.
- doesn't take up space in the freezer
- easy to portion out
Classic BARF must be kept in the freezer and thawed regularly.
2. Traveling and Logistics
Dried BARF:
- just add water
- you don't have to deal with the hygiene of raw meat
- doesn't spoil after a few hours
Raw meat is quite impractical for vacations or trips.
3. Safety and Hygiene
Drying (gentle dehydration) reduces the risk of bacteria like Salmonella or Escherichia coli, which can occur in raw meat.
4. Preservation of "BARF philosophy"
It still involves:
- a high proportion of meat
- minimum industrial processing
- no (or minimal) grains
Just instead of being raw, the food is dried.
Dried BARF is a compromise:
- it tries to maintain the advantages of a raw diet
- but adds the convenience of kibble
